Custody > Secure Establishments

Young people who are remanded or sentenced to custodial detention may be placed in a range of secure establishments, depending upon their needs and upon availability. Most custodial sentences are followed by a period of supervision in the community, and young people may be recalled to custody if they re-offend or fail to co-operate with the Youth Justice Service.

North Yorkshire YJS staff will stay in touch with young people during their sentence, visiting regularly to monitor progress and plan for release. Most young detainees have opportunities for training and education, and for positive recreational activities during their sentence. They will also complete courses designed to tackle their offending behaviour and help them stay out of trouble.

Young Offender Institution (YOI)
These are large Prison Service centres accommodating hundreds of young detainees, and are staffed by uniformed officers. Young men from North Yorkshire are mainly allocated to YOI’s at:

  • Wetherby (near Leeds)

  • Castington (County Durham, pictured)

  • Lancaster Farms (Lancashire)

Young women aged 17 or over generally go to New Hall (near Wakefield).

Secure Training Centre (STC)
STCs accommodate 30-50 young people, and usually have better facilities and higher levels of staffing. Vulnerable young offenders are prioritised for placement in STCs. Young people from North Yorkshire are mainly placed at:

  • Hassockfield (County Durham)

  • Rainsbrooke (Rugby)

  • Oakhill (Milton Keynes)

Secure Children’s Homes (SCH)
SCHs are managed by local councils, and operate as Children’s Homes within the principles of the Children Act 1989. SCHs accommodate 8-30 young people, who are typically very young or vulnerable. Some young people are placed in SCH’s for their own safety, and are not serving a criminal sentence. Young people from North Yorkshire are mainly placed at:

  • Newtown Aycliffe (County Durham)

  • Eastmoor (Leeds)

  • Sutton Place (Hull)
